Since 1996, Southern Illinois Healthcare's Community Benefits Department has collaborated with the University of Illinois Extension of Jackson County to provide the printed "Jackson County Resource Directory." Similar directories were developed with other partnering agencies with less frequency for Franklin-Williamson and Saline counties.

Through a series of discussions among area agencies about utilizing the Internet to provide a more comprehensive and efficient alternative to the current printed directory, a Steering Committee consisting of area agencies was developed in the Spring of 2001 to investigate the resources available for the development of this initiative.

The generous initial funding and technical assistance offered by Man-Tra-Con, activated the development of the AccessSI "Community Resource Directory of Southern Illinois." As the AccessSI initiative moved ahead, additional funding was granted by the Verizon Foundation, which is further assisting in the development of this much needed service that will place agencies and people throughout southern Illinois in touch with needed resources.
